Since 2007 I’ve made a playlist of the year and posted the list, mostly for my own amusement, on tumblr. Below is the list of songs that, to me, defined 2011. Each song has earned its place on the list – and where appropriate, I’ve denoted why.
2011 was the year of MUSIC. Between arts admin classmates and an internship at Millennium Park/Chicago SummerDance/World Music Fest: Chicago, the playlist of the year is nearly double its usual size.
Songs in bold denote a song by an artist I saw in action this summer at Millennium Park as a part of my internship – and are included on the list not only because they’re excellent songs, but also because they are a great memory of each of those concerts. Asterisks for bands I’ve seen in concert this year outside of Millennium Park. The order is arbitrary.
Goodbye, Spotify. I knew you were too good to be true.
This week, I was really disappointed to find out that Spotify uses an unlimited amount of your network’s upload speed for random time periods, several times per day. They use this bandwidth “reduce load on [Spotify’s] servers”, and there is no way to control this or limit it for free or paid users.
Spotify’s bandwidth-hogging has been a issue for people in Europe for over three years, and they’ve made no attempt to fix it. Spotify also makes zero attempts to notify users of these practices during the signup process - it’s buried in the EULA, and given a passing mention in one section of the FAQ. Rather than handling their own bandwidth like any other legitimate subscription service, they put us over our caps, and interrupt our work with random periods of unavailable upload bandwidth.
Now that there’s free access in America, lots and lots of people are going to install the software, and have no idea why their internet connections have suddenly gone to shit. Every instance of Spotify running in a multiple-computer household or on a business network will eat as much upload bandwidth as it possibly can. This is going to cause a lot of problems and inconveniences, but everybody will just blame their ISP.
Shame on you, Spotify. You’re violating the trust of a lot of people, and I really hope this comes back to bite you in the ass.
No wonder my computer was running so slowly!
4 years ago now, a friend of a friend told me that each year, she makes a playlist of songs that remind her of specific events, or general feeling over the past year. As it turns out, she was really onto something. I’ve done it ever since. Below is my list for 2010.
1. Little Secrets - Passion Pit.
2. Angel - Shaggy and Rayvon.
3. Bad Romance - Lady Gaga. (responsible for my brief, yet fairly productive stint of going running back last spring)
4. Bounce That - Girl Talk.
5. Gin and Platonic - The Smittens. (My former co-worker had great taste in music, she made me a mix cd last spring, and I loved this song. The Smittens are a band from Vermont.)
6. Codeine - Trampled By Turtles.
7. Wait So Long - Trampled By Turtles. (Given that I went to TWO Trampled by Turtles Concerts in 2010, I figured that merited two songs for the list. As much as I give him grief about his Minnesota-only music tastes, kudos to Patrick for teaching me the ways of concerts full of people wearing plaid.)
8. If We Ever Meet Again (Chew Fu Club Mix) - Timbaland(ish). (K-nip is to blame entirely for this song. The level of catchy this song is should be illegal and/or reserved only for ABBA).
9. Just a Friend - Biz Markie. (For the future lawyer friends — they always played this song, along with some classic Andrew WK at the pre-games at my apartment, I feel it is a significant accomplishment that I now know all the words)
10. Like a Prayer - Glee Cast. (Judge me not. I’m in graduate school for Arts Administration. Glee is allowed)
11. Age of Consent - New Order
12. Have You Ever Seen the Rain - CCR (This was the Summer of CCR)
13. Home - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
14. Doo Wa Ditty (Blow that Thing) - Zapp & Roger (for Nelson, and her undying love of music that’ll make you dance)
15. Dynamite - Taio Cruz (Do You Throw Your Hands Up in the Air Sometimes?)
16. You Ain’t Seen Nothin Yet - BTO (Thanks to Vanek for the best voicemail of the year. So far so good on those big brown eyes)
17. Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People (Thanks to Dresser for this one)
18. I and Love and You - The Avett Brothers
19. The Dog Days are Over - Florence and the Machine
20. Janglin - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (What a FANTASTIC concert)
21. Le Grenier - Jessica Fichot (my favorite artist from the Lotus Festival, far and away)
